Introduction

Danum Valley was formally part of a 972,000 ha forest concession assigned to Yayasan Sabah. In 1981, the Board of Trustees resolved that it would remain unlogged in recognition of its bio-diversity value. Danum Valley is entirely forested and mostly dominated by tall trees. Jungle

However, in the mountains on igneous and ultra mafic rock types, the forest is of a lower montane type, rich in conifers, epiphytes and herbaceous species, including abundant orchids and pitcher plants.

The vertebrate fauna is exceptionally rich with records of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and fishes. Of particular significance are populations of 10 species of primates including Orang Utan and the endemic Proboscis Monkey. Clouded leopard, Malayan Sun bear and Asian elephant are not uncommon here. A small number of Sumatran Rhino also survive, making this one of the only 2 or 3 such sites known in Borneo.

"High adventure is living. It's aggresive instead of passive living.
You don't lie back and let it happen to you, you exert some influence
over your life." - Janet Gurterie, OBS participant
